The Real host Jeannie Mai talks bout her past drug use and her 'really dark time'

The Real host Jeannie Mai opened up about her past drug use on Tuesday's episode of the daytime talk show, revealing it was during a 'dark time' in her life.

The 40 year old Mai's co-host Adrienne Bailon asked, 'what made you curious to ever want to try drugs,' with Mai jokingly responding, 'I love that she put me out there on live TV.'

As the studio got a laugh out of it, Bailon added that she was 'curious' before Mai opened up about her past.

'I definitely experimented, and I know now at 40 looking back that I had a really dark time in my life when I split from my family and moved out,' she began.

'I lived in San Francisco -- like, every drug you can imagine was there -- and honestly, it replaced the joy that I didn't have,' Mai added.

While she wouldn't divulge what drugs she experimented with, she added that being high, 'was so much more fun,' because you 'feel like a rock star, you feel special, you say anything you want to say, you're fearless,' before the 'crash.'

'That crash is what made me realize that it was darker than the pain that I actually had in my life. And that led me to go, 'Oh, shoot, this ain't for me.' Because that pit -- yo, it's the dark place. It's not a place you want to go,' she added.

Others on the panel, including Tamera Mowry-Housley and Loni Love added how today's hip-hop culture, 'normalizes' drugs but the kids listening to those songs don't know what it means.

'I mean we're at the club singing, "Molly, Percocet," like this is so easy but we're talking about things that actually kill you,' Mai added.

Mowry-Housley asked Mai if she actually knew that the drugs she was doing were bad for her and she said she was 'rebellious so I knew I was doing bad.'

She added that she loved the fact that she was 'defying what she was supposed to do' and added that she is 'a little naughty and I like to take the naughty route.'

But she eventually realized that even to this day, 'I still pay consequences for being naughty. I still have to check myself and go, 'Was that really worth it?'"

'Or in the moment how do I turn on that filter to know that that put myself in danger or risk situations that I'm in,' Mai added.

'And that took maturity, but you shouldn't have to wait until you're a grown woman because you might not get there!' she concluded as the studio audience applauded.

'That is real!' Adrienne exclaimed over the studio audience applause.
