Mike Lindell's Picture With Donald Trump Sparks Flurry of Jokes, Memes
Mike Lindell sparked a wave of mockery, along with some support, on Tuesday when he posted a photograph of himself posing with Donald Trump, the former president and current front-runner for the 2024 Republican Party nomination.
The MyPillow CEO is an outspoken supporter of Trump's discredited claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him by fraud, and is currently facing legal action by voting machine manufacturers Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic over these allegations.
On Tuesday, Lindell shared a picture of himself and Trump smiling and giving a thumbs up gesture on X, formerly Twitter, writing: "It was great catching up with our real President!"
The post provoked an intense response, receiving over 370,000 views as well as 14,000 likes, 2,100 shares and 2,200 replies from other X accounts.
One X user, a self-described Republican from Edison, New Jersey, replied: "Like climbing on the Titanic, after it hit the iceberg."
Another account shared an edited photograph of Lindell holding one of his pillows, but with the pillow cropped out and Trump's buttocks in its place, along with the MyPillow logo. They jokingly said: "Reunited and it feels so good."
A third X user, from Florida, wrote: "You poor soul. You risked your enter reputation and business on the lies of a conman. His lawyers are turning against him and taking plea deals. He tried to overthrow an election and you still cannot see. You had a great story, but the ending will not be pretty. God bless you and I pray He open your eyes. Trump used you."
In an apparent attack on Lindell's business, another replied: "How's that lumpy pillow business going?"
However, not all X accounts were so negative, with one supporter, wearing a Trump hat in his profile picture, commenting: "Thank you for standing up and fighting for what's right Mike Lindell."
A second added: "Mike Lindell will be vindicated !!!"
Newsweek has contacted Lindell for comment via the MyPillow press office.
Speaking to Newsweek last month, Lindell admitted he was no longer able to pay his legal team as he faces cases from Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic, and Eric Coomer, a former Dominion employee. All three said that they were defamed by Lindell's often-repeated claim that the 2020 election was rigged in favor of Joe Biden.
The MyPillow CEO commented: "We haven't been able to pay them [lawyers] for the past couple of months."
"These lawyers were courageous," Lindell added. "They took on a case where every other lawyer in this country are afraid to take on any case against the electronic voting machines and the evil that's out there. This was a great group of attorneys... and they need to get paid; and if there's no money to pay them, they can't keep going."
Earlier this year Lindell claimed he'd been subject to a "massive, massive cancellation" after alleging the 2020 election was stolen from Trump, a claim that has been repeatedly rejected in court and by independent election experts.
In an interview with Minnesota-based newspaper Star Tribune, he said: "We lost $100 million from attacks by the box stores, the shopping networks, the shopping channels, all of them did cancel culture on us."
On November 30, Lindell appealed for donations to "get our elections secure" during an appearance on his Lindell-TV network, admitting he had run out of his own funds.
The business tycoon said: "We're actually doing really good other than the fact that I don't have any more money into the effort but I can certainly keep being the salesman soliciting funds to keep us moving, and we really need all of your help."
