Virginia Beach Public Library's take on hit Sir Mix-a-Lot rap inspires new readers

The original version of Baby Got Back was dedicated to Sir Mix-A-Lot's obsession with women's 'big butts'.

But a library in Virginia Beach, Virginia, has caught the imagination of visitors by displaying a re-worked- and less explicit - version of the 1992 hit, this time dedicated to books.

Baby Got Books - which includes the lyrics 'I like big books and I cannot lie' - has become an online hit after the library display featuring the rap was posted on Facebook

The adapted rap continues:  'You other readers can't deny/ When a book walks in with a good plot base/And a big spine in your face/You get interested.'

As well as inspiring library visitors it has also attracted the attention of people online. The photograph has been shared more than 1,600 times and accumulated hundreds of likes and comments - including from those who have added to the literature-themed lyrics.

Joshua Patat wrote: 'Give me a plot twist-a, I can't resit-a Steve King Anne Rice didn't miss-a! Some Chucklehead tried to diss.

‘Cause Grisham was on my list / He had a copy he didn’t renew / And I pull up quick to review! / So writers if your book is sound

'And you wanna get it passed / around Call 1-800-DEWEY-DECIMAL / And kick those fiction thoughts / Baby got books!'

Virginia Beach Public Library said information specialist Brittney Ash thought it would be a 'great way to infuse fun into a library display'.

The children's section also has a Shark Week display that includes a model surfboard and a summer reading display featuring a camping area with tents and a fire.

'Brittney likes to create displays for all ages that inspire laughter and draw people in to perhaps find something new to read that they might not have otherwise found,' spokeswoman Christine Brantley told BuzzFeed News.

'She wants to reinforce that libraries are vibrant places for learning and fun and dispel the old stereotype of libraries as drab places where you’re shushed for talking or laughing.'

She said the response to the display online has 'exceeded all expectations'.

Britney's previous projects to make reading more attractive to children have included creating an igloo out of milk cartons where children were encouraged 'to snuggle up with books'.
