Explosion sends smoke through DC's Eastern Market station: 9 patients evaluated for injuries in scar

Multiple people have been evaluated for injuries after a fire broke out in a Washington, DC train station, sending smoke billowing through the area.

The DC Fire Department has successfully put out the fire in the Eastern Market Metro station after midday.

Officials said they are now ventilating the terminal station on the 700 block of Pennsylvania Avenue after evacuation.

According to DC Fire and EMS, nine patients have been evaluated for injuries and one of them has been transported for treatment for 'non life-threatening injuries'.

The Blue, Orange and Silver train lines remain suspended between Federal Center and Stadium Armory.

Crews began arriving at the scene after a box alarm went off at the station just after 1pm. On arrival, they saw smoke throughout the platform.

As of now, officials believe that an insulator under a railcar had caught fire.

Shuttle buses were brought in to help transport passengers out of the scene.

A passenger further told the channel that they heard very loud and startling pop as the train got into the tunnel after leaving Stadium Armory.

The sound continued for a few more times during the ride before commuters were evacuated at Eastern Market, the traveler further said.

The Eastern Market Station at 701 Pennsylvania Ave is about 1.5 miles away from The White House.
