Dior Faces Boycott Calls Over Bella Hadid, But Fans Missed One Major Point
Beauty fans are threatening to boycott Dior over claims that the brand replaced former ambassador Bella Hadid with Israeli model May Tager, supposedly due to the runway star's comments on the Israel-Hamas war.
The 27-year-old daughter of Palestinian-American real estate mogul Mohamed Hadid has long been a vocal supporter of Palestinians, along with her sister, Gigi Hadid. However, the real reason for Hadid's exit from the French fashion house is unrelated to the conflict.
Newsweek reached out to Dior's parent company, LVMH, and Bella Hadid for comment via email.
On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, which responded with airstrikes and a ground assault on the Gaza Strip. As of November 9, at least 1,400 people had been killed in Israel, while more than 10,500 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Associated Press.
On October 27, Hadid took to Instagram to share her thoughts on the conflict.
"I have yet to find the ideal words for this deeply intricate and horrific past 2 weeks, weeks that have turned the world's attention back towards a situation that has been taking innocent lives and affecting families for decades," she wrote.
"Harming women and children and inflicting terror does not and should not do any good for the Free Palestine movement.
"I believe deep in my heart that no child, no people anywhere, should be taken away from their family either temporarily or indefinitely. That goes for Israeli or Palestinian people alike."
The rumors about Hadid's supposed exodus from Dior appear to have begun circling on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, on November 8.
One such post—which is attributed to conservative Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak and shared by user Mizzy—includes a photograph of Hadid and reads: "Dior replaces Palestinian-origin Bella Hadid with Israeli model as brand ambassador."
"I'm sorry but i have to boycott Dior," Mizzy wrote alongside the post, which has received over 25,000 views. "Not going to support anything from Dior from now on."
"Bella Hadid is a beautiful Palestinian woman not only on the outside but on the inside!" posted Margarita Ianeva, who also shared the graphic. "Because she chose to stand with her people and on the right side Dior decided to cancel her and replace her with an Israeli model!"
Others also vowed to boycott the French fashion house, with jessie writing: "Seriously f*** dior."
"BOYCOTT DIOR!!!" declared MariemL. "Bella was always vocal about her support to Palestine! Boycott this zionist brand!"
"If you want to smell like death, wear Dior," said @lifepeptides, while Motherland wrote: "Add Dior to that boycott list."
However, a source told the Associated Press that Hadid actually left Dior Makeup in March 2022 after almost six years, when her contract ended.
May Tager does pop up in Dior's 2023 Christmas campaign, which is fronted by actress Anya Taylor-Joy. She also appeared in last year's 2022 Christmas campaign, but again, Taylor-Joy took center stage.
In June 2023, Hadid became the new face of luxury U.K. cosmetics brand Charlotte Tilbury, alongside fellow supermodels Kate Moss and Jourdan Dunn and actress Lily James.
